// DESIGN_GUIDES

Keep the source geometry. Design for the chosen process.

The file format, the geometry, and the manufacturing process are connected—but they are not interchangeable. These are practical review points, not universal production rules.

SOURCE_FILE

Preserve STEP when it exists

STEP carries solid and surface geometry. Upload it even for metal printing so the original design remains the reference.

  • + STEP / STP preferred
  • + STL accepted
  • + Do not discard source CAD
MESH_TO_CNC

Treat STL-to-CNC as reconstruction

A triangle mesh cannot restore feature history or exact analytic surfaces by itself. Check every critical interface after conversion.

  • + Curves may facet
  • + Holes may shift
  • + Approve rebuilt model
CNC_GEOMETRY

Design for real cutting tools

Tool access, internal radii, depth, workholding, and setup count shape the machining route.

  • + Use practical radii
  • + Expose tool access
  • + Identify critical faces
METAL_AM

Review the build, not only the mesh

Orientation, supports, enclosed regions, wall behavior, removal, and post-machining belong in the additive plan.

  • + Support access
  • + Build orientation
  • + Post-process interfaces
PRECISION

Put precision where function needs it

Define mating, locating, sealing, and alignment features instead of assigning tight tolerances everywhere.

  • + Fits + datums
  • + Threads + inserts
  • + Inspection intent
PROTOTYPE_DATA

Report what the plastic print taught you

Fit, motion, interference, breakage, heat, wear, and assembly notes help route the metal revision.

  • + What worked
  • + What failed
  • + What cannot change
